Theoretical modelling of antennas in stratified media, enabling the design of terahertz graphene antennas and metasurfaces

In this talk, Prof. Mosig will sketch the history of the development of full-wave integral equations for problems involving conductors embedded in stratified media, in the frame of the Sommerfeld formulation. The analytical models, the required Green's functions, the numerical techniques used to evaluate them, and the development of discretization algorithms (the Method of Moments), will all be discussed from a historical perspective, highlighting the role of some not so well-known protagonists. Two classical, almost canonical, problems will be cited as examples: the Sommerfeld half-space problem and the microstrip antenna problem, with interesting extensions to timely subjects like airborne phased arrays, negative permittivities, graphene-based antennas and metasurfaces. Both students pursuing their MSc and PhD and experienced researchers in applied electromagnetics and antenna/microwave engineering will find this talk particularly interesting and useful.
